Microwave Oven Repair for All Types
Professional repair for countertop, over-the-range, and built-in microwave ovens experiencing problems such as no power, uneven heating, or a turntable that has stopped rotating. We service all major brands and restore safe, full operation.
A microwave that won't power on, heats unevenly, or stops spinning mid-cycle usually has a fixable component failure. Most problems come down to a handful of known parts that wear out with regular use.
Common problems we fix
- Microwave won't turn on at all — A blown internal fuse is the most common culprit. Door switches that fail to register as closed can also cut all power. Both are straightforward replacements once the unit is opened and tested.
- Food comes out cold or unevenly heated — Uneven or absent heating points to a failing magnetron, a weak diode, or a faulty capacitor. A technician will test the high-voltage circuit to pinpoint which component has failed before replacing anything.
- Turntable stopped rotating — The turntable motor or the plastic drive coupling underneath the glass plate usually causes this. If the motor hums but doesn't spin, the coupling is likely stripped. A silent motor means the motor itself needs replacement.
- Control panel buttons not responding — Membrane keypads wear out, especially on units used daily for years. In some cases the control board behind the panel has failed. We test both before recommending a repair path.
What to Check Before You Call
A few quick checks can save a service call. First, test the outlet with another appliance. Microwaves pull significant current and a tripped breaker or a failed outlet is easy to overlook. Next, inspect the door. All three door switches must engage for the unit to power on. A cracked latch hook or a door that doesn't close flush will prevent startup even if everything else is fine.
- Reset the circuit breaker for that circuit
- Test the outlet with a lamp or phone charger
- Look for cracks or damage on the door latch hooks
- Remove and reseat the turntable plate and ring
Built-In and Over-the-Range Units Take More Work
Countertop units are simpler to service because they're freestanding and accessible. Over-the-range models are mounted and wired into the cabinetry, so removal adds time. Built-in units require pulling the trim kit and sometimes partially disassembling surrounding cabinetry to reach the unit. The repair itself is often identical, but the access work affects how long the job takes.
How Central Louisiana's Climate Affects Microwaves
High humidity is hard on microwave electronics. The capacitor and control board are both vulnerable to moisture-related degradation over time. Homes with poor ventilation or microwaves installed above a range without proper exhaust routing trap grease and steam, which shortens the life of internal components. Units in older Alexandria homes or manufactured housing with limited ventilation tend to show these problems sooner.
Repair or Replace: How to Think About It
Age and repair cost are the two deciding factors. A five-year-old over-the-range unit with a failed door switch is almost always worth fixing. A twelve-year-old countertop unit needing a magnetron and a control board is a closer call. We'll tell you what the repair involves so you can weigh it against replacement cost yourself.
- Units under 7 years old: most repairs make financial sense
- Built-in models: replacement costs include cabinetry fit-out
- Over-the-range: installation cost of a new unit is significant
